The
Hermitage Gardens
The gardens at Crystal Hermitage compliment the natural beauty of our Sierra foothill location: beautifully terraced gardens opening onto the panoramic vista of the Middle Yuba River valley. Our Mediterranean climate of cool, wet (50-60 inches of annual rainfall) winters and warm, dry summers allows us to include many different planting elements in the gardens providing year round seasonal interest. Thousands of spring flowering bulbs, summer perennials and annuals and great hanging baskets, breathtaking autumn foliage color and the camellias in winter-there is always something to enjoy.
The upper gardens include a sweeping colonnade covered with wisteria framing a large Grecian fountain, a small chapel inspired by the Porziuncola of Saint Francis, a pond surrounded by azaleas and rhododendrons, and a small gift shop/Shrine. The upper gardens and chapel have provided a storybook setting for many small weddings (seating in the chapel is limited to 50). The chapel & upper gardens are open year round to the public.
The lower gardens are open by appointment and in conjunction with special events.

The
lower gardens are wrapped around the pool and terrace providing a stunning
backdrop for evenings of music, lectures, readings, and plays during the
summer. Benches are conveniently placed for encouraging intimate conversations,
meditation, or enjoying the panoramic view of the river valley.
